ARCH402A | 4TH YEAR APPLIED RESEARCH STUDIO| FALL 2012 |SELECTED FOR ACCREDITATION
The focus of the project is on the idea that floor plates would be able to shape a carved form that would allow for openings and possible private-public spaces for the users. The floor plates reflect the shape of the site and are carved out of by triangular shapes to juxtapose the orthogonal and angular conditions and to differentiate the original and altered. The floor plates are offset in a more random manner for the atrium space to allow for different experiences in the public space for the users and to also differentiate between the different carvings. Volumes of the programs are offset from the floor plates, as well, to create the illusion of floating roofs, and to reinforce the idea that allows for the carving to become more prominent for onlookers. The overhangs would ideally allow for sun-shading. The terraced condition of the roof would allow for a gradual transition from the podium to the towers. The consistent angle from which the terraced roof is cut creates an illusion of a twisted form. The facade of horizontal louvers create a varied surface for the building. These louvers are prominent enough such that an undulated surface may be visible. The louvers would also aid in light control.
