MUSEUM OF COMIC ART AND ANIME

ARCH402C | 5TH YEAR COMPREHENSIVE | FALL 2013

The purpose of this project was to design a Los Angeles based museum, located across the Geffen MOCA. The studio focuses on the understanding of complex building systems and the technical requirements relevant to contemporary architectural practice are an essential part of a rigorous design process. Designed as a museum for comic art and anime, the focus of the gallery space is on art displays. The museum is designed to separate visitor and services paths. Strips of 10 foot increments are used to determine the positioning of openings for skylights and light shafts, as well as circulation of ramping systems. The volumes of the spaces are split according to programming with private offices located on the top floor, to the gallery space, to the public spaces on the ground floor. The gallery spaces are offset to incorporate the idea of constant flow through the ramping system, promoting the idea that visitors will view the art work and continue on with the exhibits. Light shafts are positioned along the ramps and gallery spaces to allow for natural lighting. The entry to the museum is located within the site to activate the outdoor space shared between the two museums, MOCAA and the Geffen.
